In this talk, Lisa Sheppy explores the lost industrial craft of tissue transfer printing, pioneered by Worcester Porcelain in 1755 and central to the company’s commercial success. She presents research that proposes a creative adaptation of this production method, putting a historical investigation into practice through the lens of contemporary printmaking. By combining 21st-century digital drawing and laser engraving techniques with manual processes, she enables the transition of this closed industrial craft knowledge into an open and accessible method of artistic production before it becomes irretrievably lost.
Lisa Sheppy is an artist, writer and researcher who completed her PhD at the Centre for Print Research in 2023. Her doctoral investigation, titled, ‘An Industrial Craft Reinstated: A Printmaker’s Perspective on Tissue Transferware’, examined the revival of a historic ceramic printmaking process. She is also the author of the forthcoming book, ‘Ceramics Printmaking: The History and Future of a Craft Practice’, due to be published by Bloomsbury in 2027. Her research interests encompass ceramics and printmaking, the reinterpretation of obsolete craft processes, and most recently museum archives relating to Royal Worcester’s ceramic and printmaking heritage. Her art practice brings together the disciplines of craft and fine art, combining material knowledge, historical research and contemporary visual language to explore the relationship between process, ornament and making. She is currently working towards her one person exhibition, ‘Ornament Unbound: Tissue transferware reframed’ at The Museum of Royal Worcester in September 2026, which is part of ‘ACE Unlocking Collections’. As resident artist she will be sharing her research and practice with the public demonstrations throughout the Autumn.
