It is 100 years since George Mallory died on Everest. His wife Ruth was Arts and Crafts royalty so her life covers both the Third Pole (as Edward Wilson called it) and the Women’s Guild which was started by Ruth Mallory’s mother May Turner in partnership with May Morris, William Morris’s daughter in 1907.

Ruth was a founder member of the Pinnacle Club, the first all-female rock climbing club in Britain. In the four years from her marriage to George in 1914 to the end of the First World War, she had three children, learned to lead climbs and even made one first ascent.

This talk will explore her story.

We are pleased to welcome back Katherine MacInnes to speak on her latest book Behind Everest – Ruth Mallory’s Story (as Kate Nicholson). She has recently been shortlisted for the Boardman Tasker Mountain Literature prize. Friends may remember Katherine’s 2023 enjoyable talk on her previous book Snow Widows – Scott’s Fatal Antarctic Expedition by the Women Left Behind.

Kate Nicholson began researching Behind Everest when her husband left to climb Everest by Mallory’s route in 2006. Back then the Mallory’s son John was still alive so much of the book is based on primary source material, interviews and family documents. This book is the ‘H is for Hawk’ of climbing, part biography, part auto-biography. It uses a variety of non-fiction writing techniques to try to put the reader into the room where it happened. What would it like to be married to a man attempting a yet unconquered peak? What if that peak was the highest mountain in the world? Could it be done? And what was it like to be ‘the one who waits’? What was it like to be Ruth?
