Glasgow’s wealth acquired from trade and shipbuilding saw the expansion of the city in the 18th and 19th centuries and produced perfect conditions for the growth of art and architecture. New patrons commissioned houses and paintings to display inside them. The group known as the Glasgow Boys sought a new direction, heavily influenced by Dutch and French art, and produced paintings that challenged the traditional dominance of the Edinburgh Royal Academy painters.
Speaker: Fiona James
Fiona has had a long career in teaching history of art; she taught the subject at A level at The Cheltenham Ladies’ College from 2001 to 2015.
Since retiring from full-time teaching she has gone on to develop classes for adults and has successfully run courses in Cheltenham, Cirencester and more recently in and around Tetbury where she lives.
She also devotes her time and knowledge to The Tetbury Goods Shed Arts Centre where she is a Trustee and a regular lecturer and to Rodmarton Manor, the Arts and Crafts House near Tetbury, where she is a guide.
Her interest in Scottish Art was inspired by a study trip to the city of Glasgow and the surrounding area last summer.
