PLEASE NOTE THIS EVENT IS CANCELLED

Unfortunately August has proved a difficult month for bookings for our proposed trip to Shrewsbury and, even after advertising to other groups, we have too few participants to make it viable.

Reluctantly we therefore have to cancel it.

Day trip to Shrewsbury for Calligraphy and Stained Glass Exhibitions: Wednesday 14th August

11:00 arrive Shrewsbury : Tea or coffee with fresh baked scone, clotted cream & jam is booked at the River View café near St Mary’s Church, and included.
The day is then free for you to explore Shrewsbury. Our recommendations are these exhibitions at the Church of St Mary the Virgin and the Art Gallery, all with free entry.

Church of St Mary the Virgin: St Mary’s Street, Shrewsbury SY1 1DX.

Letters Hand Made (Living Letters VII) and Stained Glass exhibition

During the Stained Glass Festival 2024 one of the featured exhibitions will be run by the Calligraphy & Lettering Arts Society (CLAS). To celebrate CLAS’s 30th anniversary, a travelling exhibition of new work by national and international lettering artists from among the CLAS membership will visit four venues this year, one being Shrewsbury in August. The exhibition will showcase the amazing talents which exist within CLAS’ membership and is being held at St Mary the Virgin.
It coincides with a stained glass exhibition being held in the church.

Reflecting an aspect of industry in the county and the skills of local people, our Ceramics Collection has developed into one of national importance.
The collection consists of around 3,500 pieces of pottery and porcelain, mainly from the eighteenth and nineteenth century. It includes examples of famous tea sets and tiles made by local companies such as Caughley, Coalport, and Maw’s & Co., who sold their ware around the world.
Our Social History Collections reflect the daily and working life of Shropshire’s inhabitants. They include important collections of agricultural vehicles and machinery, coins and medals (numismatics), arms and armour and costume.
Our Costume Collection contains approximately 5000 items dating from 1700 to 1980. Womenswear contains over 100 complete dresses including a Mantua (1710) and the Hazledine Wedding Dress (1758). Menswear includes important items such as Clive of India’s Mayoral Robe (1760) and a Postman’s Coat of 1860.
