At first sight, Cheltenham may seem an unlikely location for street art, let alone for a street art festival, but between 2017 and 2024 seven festivals were held and there are hopes for another in 2026. This lecture will trace the evolution of street art from unauthorised graffiti to council-supported urban art; it will then look beyond Cheltenham to other British and continental towns and cities, asking how far street art, and muralism in particular, have become mainstream, with Banksy only one – albeit the best known – of a new generation of artists developing international reputations.
Adrian Barlow is a retired writer and lecturer whose interests and publications range across education, literature, architecture and stained glass. Formerly Deputy Director of the University of Cambridge Institute of Continuing Education, he lives in Cheltenham and was Chair of the Friends of the Wilson during the Museum and Art Gallery’s years of Covid and closure.
