Sir Gordon Russell was a leading figure in 20th century furniture design and manufacturing. He established his business in the rural Cotswold village of Broadway in 1919 and over the succeeding 80 years it grew from its modest beginnings to become the largest employer in the area employing over 300 men and women. Christopher’s talk will explore Sir Gordon’s early years and the influences that led him to furniture design, the changes of style from Arts and Crafts through to Art Deco and Modernism and his championing of British design which led him to receive his Knighthood.
Christopher Hotten was a barrister for 45 years, the last 24 as a Queen’s Counsel, specialising in serious crime. He prosecuted and defended in more than 100 cases of homicide. He moved to Broadway in the Cotswolds in 2014 and retired from practice in 2018. He has been closely involved with the Gordon Russell Design Museum in Broadway as a volunteer, organiser of its Friends and Trustee. He is presently the Chair of the Broadway Trust.
