Stand outside the Clarence Street entrance to The Wilson, look to your left, and over the entrance to the café you will see the stainless-steel grille commissioned by the Friends from the artist blacksmith Alan Evans for the 1989 extension. Look up at the grille and you will see a squirrel which may remind you of the roundels on a pair of firedogs by Ernest Gimson in the museum. This is the first of two talks related to a major exhibition, Earth Fire Iron: Alan Evans and the New Iron Age, opening in Stroud’s Museum in the Park in September 2025.

Mary Greensted was a curator at Cheltenham for many years and has continued to work freelance. She also writes about the Arts & Crafts movement and is currently Chair of the Guild of Handicraft Trust and Court Barn in Chipping Campden.

Please note we have moved our talks at St Matthews to TUESDAYS.

In addition to the talk, we will also be joined by one of The Wilson sponsored artists in residence, Genaro Martinez Media, who will be sketching the audience. His sketches will be available for sale after the talk for 8 GBP. If anyone wants to be sketched in particular, please let us know before the talk and Genaro will accommodate accordingly.

Cost per person including tea/coffee and cake: FoTW members £11, non-members very welcome £13
