Our first visit will be to St Michael and All Angels church, Bishop’s Cleeve to see PJ’s new altarpiece (as seen in the last newsletter) that was recently dedicated by the Rt Rev Rachel Treweek, Bishop of Gloucester. This ancient Norman church, highly rated by Simon Jenkins in his book 1,000 Best Churches, has some fascinating and unusual hidden gems. A local historian will be on hand to show us the remarkable features. Refreshments will be served by parishioners before we depart for Gloucester.
In Gloucester we’ll be given a special guided tour and talk about the recently restored Llanthony Priory in the grounds of Gloucestershire College which has now, thanks to a lottery grant, been taken off the ‘at risk’ register. Lunch is at your own expense and can be bought in the adjacent Quays precinct.
In the afternoon, the Principal of Gloucestershire College will welcome us and give us a short introduction about the college as we gather in the atrium to see the large triptych PJ painted for the college. PJ will show us a short film GloCorma, which traces the development of the painting from blank canvas to installation.
We’ll return to Cheltenham to visit the new student village, built for the University in Pittville, previously Cheltenham Art College, where we’ll see PJ’s work plus work by other alumni and former staff such as Reggie Dent, Harold Sayer and Peter Thursby.
Tea can be taken in the refectory before the coach arrives at the end of the visit at approximately 17:00.
COST PER PERSON: £30.00 includes morning coffee and a donation to St Michael and All Angels Church.
